On December 15, 2023, Part II of the anthology “Üheskoos kirik” (Being Church Together) was presented to the public in Tallinn at the Institute of Theology of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church.
The largest auditorium was packed with participants. The presentation was preceded by a midday prayer led by New Testament Professor Randar Tasmuth. Speeches followed. First, the Dean of the Faculty of Theology, Liina Kilemit, spoke. Among other things, she said that, as there was no public presentation of Part I, which had been published a year ago, there were in fact two books being presented.
The two editors present, Thomas-Andreas Põder and Kadri Eliisabet Põder, then took the floor. A special word of thanks and applause went to the third contributor, Kadri Lääs, who unfortunately could not attend the presentation. Thanks were also extended to all those who contributed to the preparation of the voluminous collection.
The two-volume anthology brings to the Estonian reader a selection of the most important results of the doctrinal conversations and theological study processes of recent decades from the context of the global communion of Lutheran churches (Lutheran World Federation, LWF), the Communion of Protestant Churches in Europe (CPCE) and the Porvoo Communion (Anglican and Lutheran Churches in Communion).
These three church communions – communions in which churches are mutually fully recognizing each other as churches and living together as churches – are the home for the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church (EELC) in the ecumenical landscape.
The collection is dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the Lutheran World Federation (2022), the 50th jubilee of the Leuenberg Agreement (2023) and the 30th Anniversary of the Porvoo Joint Declaration (2022).
Translated from German and English, the texts provide a representative introduction to Christian spirituality and help to understand the pan-European and global context of Evangelical Lutheran theology in Estonian.
While Part I (367 pages, published in 2022) focuses on classical doctrinal issues – church and worship, church unity and church communion, Scripture, Eucharist, ministry and theology (education) – Part II (519 pages) is more practical, focusing on the important relational fields of ecclesial and Christian life. It focuses on witness and service – mission and diakonia – as fundamental expressions of ecclesial and Christian life, on Christian life in the public sphere of a secularly and religiously diverse society, and on the relationship of the Christian religion with other religions.
From the context of the CPCE, the collection contains 12 theological documents, accompanied by special prefaces for the Estonian translations. The collection is framed by introductory and concluding chapters, and includes an index of contents. An appendix to the collection contains 14 short statements by the General Assembly, the Council or the Presidium of the CPCE. Previously (2019), the CPCE Guidelines on Infertility Care and Aid in Dying have been published in Estonian.
As a result of long-term joint work, the anthology “Church Together” is an important landmark on the Estonian theological landscape. It is a testimony to the power of the Estonian language in speaking and thinking about God and faith. It also demonstrates that there are theologians and others with the necessary skills in Estonia who feel a responsibility and a vocation to contribute to the common culture of reflection and discussion that transcends national and church boundaries.
The publication of the edition was supported by the Zentrum für Mission und Ökumene – Nordkirche weltweit, the Ministry of the Interior of the Republic of Estonia, Gustav-Adolf-Werk e.V., the Consistory of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church and the journal Kirik & Teoloogia.

Am 15. Dezember 2023 wurde Teil II des Sammelbandes Üheskoos kirik” (Kirche gemeinsam) in Tallinn im Theologischen Institut der Estnischen Evangelisch-Lutherischen Kirche der Öffentlichkeit vorgestellt.
Der größte Hörsaal war mit Teilnehmern gefüllt. Der Präsentation ging ein Mittagsgebet voraus, das von Randar Tasmuth, Professor für Neues Testament, geleitet wurde. Es folgten Reden. Zunächst sprach die Dekanin der Theologischen Fakultät, Liina Kilemit. Sie wies u. a. darauf hin, dass es sich bei der Presentation eigentlich um zwei Bücher handele, da Teil I, der vor einem Jahr erschien, nicht öffentlich vorgestellt wurde.
Anschließend ergreifen die beiden anwesenden Herausgebenden, Thomas-Andreas Põder und Kadri Eliisabet Põder, das Wort. Ein besonderes Wort des Dankes und des Beifalls ging an den dritten Mitwirkenden, Kadri Lääs, der leider nicht an der Präsentation teilnehmen konnte. Der Dank galt auch all jenen, die an der Erstellung der umfangreichen Sammlung beteiligt waren.
Der zweibändige Sammelband bringt dem estnischen Leser eine Auswahl der wichtigsten Ergebnisse der Lehrgespräche und theologischen Studienprozesse der letzten Jahrzehnte aus dem Kontext der weltweiten Gemeinschaft lutherischer Kirchen (Lutherischer Weltbund, LWB), der Gemeinschaft Evangelischer Kirchen in Europa (GEKE) und der Porvoo-Gemeinschaft (Anglikanische und Lutherische Kirchen in Gemeinschaft).
Diese drei Kirchengemeinschaften – Gemeinschaften, in denen sich die Kirchen gegenseitig in vollem Umfang als Kirchen anerkennen und als Kirchen zusammenleben – sind für die Estnische Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche die Heimat in der ökumenischen Landschaft.

Aus dem Kontext der GEKE enthält die Sammlung 12 theologische Dokumente, die von speziellen Vorworten für die estnischen Übersetzungen begleitet werden. Die Sammlung wird durch einleitende und abschließende Kapitel eingerahmt und enthält ein Sachregister. Ein Anhang zur Sammlung enthält u.a. 14 kurze Stellungnahmen der Vollversammlung, des Rates oder des Präsidiums der GEKE. Zuvor (2019) sind die GEKE-Orientierungshilfen zur Reproduktionsmedizin und Sterbehilfe in estnischer Sprache veröffentlicht worden.
Es zeigt auch, dass es in Estland Theologinnen und Theologen und andere Personen mit den notwendigen Fähigkeiten gibt, die sich verantwortlich und berufen fühlen, zu dieser gemeinsamen Kultur der Reflexion und Diskussion über nationale und kirchliche Grenzen hinweg beizutragen.
