On 3 June 2016, the CPCE’s representatives learned from press reports that the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia will in future only allow men to become pastors.
The CPCE is extremely concerned at this development. In the vast majority of the churches of CPCE, including those in the Baltic region, women are ordained for ministry of word and sacrament. Church communion in that country, the region and between the member churches of the CPCE will suffer as a result of this decision by the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia.
The key issue from the CPCE’s point of view is whether the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia will unreservedly recognise the ordination of women for ministry of word and sacrament in the Church communion’s other member churches or not. On 11 June 2016, during the Council session in Rome, the Presidium of the CPCE wrote a letter to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia in which the CPCE requests a binding answer to this question and offers to visit the Church to discuss the matter directly in person.
